We are grateful to introduce some of the top professionals in their field and their laser-like focus on different health issues.
First up we have Juanè Raats.
She is an Occupational Therapist that has been working in
the field of Lymphoedema since 2006.
Lymphoedema is an abnormal, long term swelling of the body,
caused by a collection of lymphatic fluid in the tissues below the
skin. It occurs when there is a dysfunction in the lymphatic system.
Primary Lymphoedema is when the lymphatic vessels or the
lymph nodes have not completely developed before birth, such
as in congenital, praecox and tarda.
Secondary Lymphoedema develops as a result of damage to or obstruction of the normal lymphatic system for e.g. surgery, trauma, long ICU stay, cancer, infection, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, diabetes, renal failure, congestive heart failure, venous insufficiency, lung problems, arthritis, non-healing wounds and pregnancy. This can cause an inability of the lymphatic system to transport the excess fluid from the skin back to venous circulation.
